More Filipinos are becoming more engaged in pushing for transparency in governance as the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) reported that over 12,000 requests have been recorded in the government’s electronic Freedom of Information (FOI) portal in the past 9 months.

FOI Project Management Office Director and PCOO Assistant Secretary Kris Ablan on Thursday bared that there are now more than 41, 200 requests received in the portal since its launch in 2016.

“Filipinos are gradually discovering the advantage of the electronic FOI portal or the e-FOI portal since we launched it in 2016,” he said during the Network Briefing News with host PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar.

“Filipinos are gradually discovering the advantage of the electronic FOI portal or the e-FOI portal since we launched it in 2016,” he said during the Network Briefing News with host PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar.

“As of now, there are already forty-one thousand, two hundred plus (41,200+) e-FOI requests received by the portal],” he added.

Asec. Ablan said that despite various quarantine restrictions and measures experienced across the country, 490 agencies of the government continue to respond to these requests, most of them inquiring on the COVID-19 programs and responses. Among these agencies were the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for its distribution of emergency cash aid under the Social Amelioration Program (SAP); Social Security System for its calamity loan; Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for its labor force assistance; and the Department of Health for up-to-date health information and data.

“Most of these e-FOI requests are related to the COVID-19 programs and responses of the government. This only proves that information is very important to the Filipinos to transcend from the challenges brought about by the current pandemic],” he added.

The e-FOI portal is the government’s digital platform for citizens to ask information to the government, and for the government agencies to respond to these requests by providing timely and relevant information, records, and documents.

“We continue to call on our fellow Filipinos to participate in the activities of our government through the FOI program. Because we, Filipinos, must know and we care. Ask your government. Lodge your request of information to our e-FOI portal at www.foi.gov.ph],” he said.
