President Rodrigo Roa Duterte hailed weightlifting champion Hidilyn Diaz on Wednesday for her historic gold medal triumph in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and awarded her with an additional P3 million in addition to the government’s monetary incentive.

“The nation is ecstatic about your achievement. Your achievement is the achievement of the Philippine nation,” President Duterte told Diaz. “So we are extremely proud. We cannot express even in the words of an athlete how we should really be shouting hallelujah. Pero salamat naman sa pagtiis mo.”

“I hope that the years of toil, the years of disappointments and the years na hindi maganda ang nangyari in the past, just forget them.”

The Olympic champion landed in Manila on Wednesday after winning the country’s first Olympic gold medal in the women’s 55 kgs on Monday.

Aside from the President’s P3-million award, she will get a P10-million incentive from the government, in addition to other monetary incentives from private persons.

At the same occasion, the President bestowed the Presidential Medal of Merit on Diaz and rewarded her with a fully furnished house and lot in her hometown of Zamboanga.

Diaz, a four-time Olympian, ended the Philippines’ almost century-long quest for Olympic gold, having first competed in the Games in 1924.

Prior to her victory on Monday, she had earned a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
