The Olympics may be taking place in Paris this summer, but Team USA’s uniforms are distinctly American.
Ralph Lauren is once again the official outfitter of Team USA for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the designer just revealed this year’s looks for the opening and closing ceremonies.
At the opening ceremony parade July 26, athletes will sport a navy wool blazer with red and white tipping, adorned with Ralph Lauren’s classic pony logo on one side and the Team USA Olympics logo on the other.
A striped Oxford shirt and a tapered jean will complete the preppy look. Male athletes are also shown wearing a dark blue knitted tie, while female athletes are not.
Athletes will also wear a suede buck shoe.
The uniforms for the closing ceremony Aug. 11 will have a sportier feel. Athletes will wear a racing-style jacket emblazoned with various Team USA logos as well as the Ralph Lauren pony logo, against a color-blocked backdrop of red, white and blue.
The jacket is paired with a Team USA belt, a classic polo shirt, a baseball cap and white denim jeans with “Team USA” printed on one leg.
The white jeans will include textured detailing around the knees, as shown in a photo of skateboarder Jagger Eaton sporting the closing ceremony uniform.
This marks the ninth time Ralph Lauren has designed the team’s looks for the opening and closing ceremony parades. The designer noted in a press release that all components of the uniforms were manufactured in the United States.
While the uniforms’ colors are obviously American, they may also serve as a nod to this summer’s host country: The French flag’s colors are also red, white and blue.
In the release, Ralph Lauren says the collection “draws inspiration from the dynamic and vibrant host city of Paris.”
The brand also says both the opening and closing ceremony uniforms “embody the spirit and pride of Team USA” and serve “as a symbol of unity and inspiration for both our team and the millions of fans who will be cheering them on.”
While Ralph Lauren has the opening and closing ceremonies covered, Nike is outfitting athletes for the medal ceremonies. On the podium this summer, Team USA medalists will sport blue zip-up jackets and tapered pants in a stretchy material.
