SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain (AP) — A cruise ship struck by a viral outbreak arrived in the port of Tenerife on Monday, where medical personnel stood ready to assess passengers as the vessel completed its voyage under a cloud of health concerns.
The ship docked at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the Canary Islands, after reports emerged that a number of those on board had fallen ill during the crossing. Health officials and emergency medical teams were stationed at the port ahead of the ship’s arrival, prepared to screen and treat affected passengers upon disembarkation.
Authorities did not immediately disclose the number of passengers and crew members who had been sickened, nor did they confirm the specific nature of the virus responsible for the outbreak. Port health officials said an assessment would be conducted before passengers were permitted to leave the vessel.
The incident is the latest in a series of illness outbreaks to strike the cruise industry, which has long grappled with the rapid spread of infectious disease in the confined quarters of large passenger ships. Norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness, is among the most common culprits in such outbreaks, though officials had yet to identify the pathogen in this case.
Passengers on board described growing unease as the number of sick travelers increased during the voyage, with some reporting that onboard medical staff had been overwhelmed by the volume of cases.
Local health authorities in the Canary Islands said they were coordinating with national health agencies and the ship’s operator to manage the situation and prevent any potential spread of illness to the wider community.
The cruise line had not issued a formal statement at the time of publication. Further details were expected once medical teams completed their initial assessment of those on board.
